INTRODUCTION
This unit will evaluate the key elements in human resource management.
Learners will analyse employment law and how it affects service industries businesses. They will also investigate the current state of employee relations in service industries.
Learners will evaluate the practicalities of the recruitment and selection process in order to develop the skills required to effectively administer this human resource function.
Learners will examine training and development in service industries businesses to determine the contribution they make to an effective business.
Aim:
This unit allows learners to gain understanding of human resource management, employee relations and employment law, recruitment and selection, and training and development in service industries.

On successful completion of this unit a learner will:

- Evaluate the role and purpose of human resource management in a selected service industry
- Prepare a human resources plan based on an analysis of supply and demand for a selected service industry business

TASK 1 LO 1 Explain Human Resource Management
You are required to exhibit an understanding to LO1 and address ACs 1.1 and 1.2, as specified.
Scenario
British Airways have currently appointed you as a trainee Human Resource Officer as it has currently been successful in gaining agreement for flights to Madeira from Heathrow. The duration of flight is four hours and there will be four flights from Heathrow and four returning from Madeira per week in the peak summer season and three flights from Heathrow and three returning from Madeira per week, the rest of the year.
Your line manager wants you to make a written report (approximately 1,000 words) which includes:
- An evaluation of the role and purpose of human resource management in a selected service industry with reference to British Airways (AC 1.1)
- The preparing of an HR plan, based on an analysis of supply and demand, with justification of the staff roles and numbers of staff and hours of work required to deliver the new flight service to Madeira. (AC 1.2)
TASK 2 LO2 Examine the effect of employee relations and employment law on service industries businesses
Write a report on the following:
- analyse the current state of employment relations in the airline industry (AC 2.1)
- evaluate how employment law affects the management of human resources within British Airways. (AC 2.2)
TASK 3 LO3 Determine the recruitment and selection process
Scenario
You are working really hard since your appointment with British Airways and have now been given the task of reviewing the recruitment and selection processes within the organisation to ensure that they meet legal requirements and industry standards.
This report should include the following: -
- An overview of the job description and personal specification for Cabin Crew, BA found in Appendix 1. You may use an alternative job description and person specification from British Airways to complete this task. If you choose to do so, you must include a copy of both documents with your (AC 3.1)
- A difference between the selection processes of British Airways (Cabin Crew) and Transport for London (e.g. role of Customer Services Assistant in Victoria Coach Station), found in Appendix 2. (AC 3.2)
TASK 4 LO4 Analyse training and development in service industries businesses
Scenario
Write a set of guidance notes which are to be given to trainee managers which analyse the contribution of training and development activities to the effective operation of either British Airways or Transport for London. (AC 4.1)
This part should include the following: -
- Different types of training
- The role and need of training
- Benefits and effectiveness of training
- Difference between training and development
- A summary of the overall contribution of training and development to the effective operation of the organisation
