What is Academic Language?

Answer :

So what is academic language? Academic language is the formal language which we use in our schools, colleges, and professional education. You can define academic language as a distinct linguistic format which mainly includes the vocabulary, grammar, and style that is needed for writing essays, reading textbooks, giving presentations, and even understanding academic subjects.

Some of the features of academic language are that, unlike the everyday language that we use, it is a little more precise, structured, and all in all very formal. It uses complex sentences and subject-specific terms in order to explain ideas clearly and logically. For example:

  • Everyday language: “Plants need sunlight to grow.”
  • Academic language: “Plants require sunlight for the process of photosynthesis and healthy development.”

The importance of academic language for student is that it can help you share ideas, analyse info, and perform better in academic life. This is especially important for subjects like science, maths, history, and literature.

In addition to this, academic language also includes a student’s ability to discuss, define, compare, summarise, and assess ideas in an organised and clear way. It is used by teachers, researchers, and students in books, assignments, classrooms, and exams. Here are the main characteristics of academic language:

  1. Formality: It uses formal language and avoids the use of slang. For example, using cannot instead of can’t.
  2. Precision: Academic language uses clear and specific words instead of vague words. For example, “significantly increased”, instead of using “went way up”.
  3. Objectivity: It also uses proof and a third-person point of view in order to avoid personal opinions.
  4. Tentativeness: It uses careful language like “the data suggests” or “the research indicates,” instead of making strong claims.

Some examples of academic language skills are:

  • Writing research papers and essays
  • Understanding lectures and textbooks
  • Participating in academic discussions
  • Explaining concepts using evidence and reasoning

Developing and understanding the meaning of academic language is very important because it can prepare students for higher education and professional careers. Below are the three tiers of vocabulary:

  • Tier 1 (Social Language):Simple and everyday words like baby, happy, and run.
  • Tier 2 (General Academic Words): Common academic words like analyse, evaluate, summarise, and therefore. Those which are used across many subjects
  • Tier 3 (Domain-Specific Language): Technical words which are only used in specific subjects. Like photosynthesis (science), hyperinflation (economics), and syntax (linguistics).
