In the present assignment, Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Amazon Inc. is selected in the two given case study respectively.  M&S is UK based multinational retailer company which deals in providing clothing, home as well as luxurious food products whereas Amazon Inc. is an American electronic commerce and cloud computing company founded in 1994. The project includes roles and characteristics of manager and leader along with their functions in various situations. Various theories and approaches along with their strengths and weaknesses, Internal and external factors along with their impact are covered under this report (Giegerich, 2010).

P1: Various roles and characteristics of a manager and leader

Managers and leaders are the one whose direction and guidance help employees working in an organisation to perform their delegated roles and responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner.

Managers: They are the one who are responsible to formulate an effective decision and plans in order to execute and monitor future business activities after delegating roles and responsibilities to their workers on the basis of their skills and capabilitie

Leaders: They are the one who defines plans and polices formulated by management to their workers and accordantly motive them to work in team so as to achieve better possible result.

Roles of a Leader:

Building team: In order to achieve better possible result, it is important for employees to work in a team and gives combined efforts. Therefore, a leader is one who is responsible to provide the importance of team work to the employees and the outcomes they received in near future. This will enhance the interest and working behaviour of team mates to perform better.

Motivator: In order to bring possible outcomes, it is important that every employee should work hard and give their best. Thus, leaders should require to act as a motivator through which they can encourage workers through conducting various training and learning programs which help them in enhancing their skills and knowledge and brings motivation and self-confidence among them.

Supportive: Leader is responsible to support their employees at every level so as to ensure that business activities are executed in proper manner. It improves the morale and interest of employees to perform well. In case of any issues and problems faced by employees at workplace, a leader is required to resolve all such issues through conducting meeting with conflicted parties (Kang, 2010).

Roles of a Manager:

Formulating policies and plans: Before executing future business activities, it is important for an organisation have a suitable plans and policies which direct their workforce to perform in right direction. Therefore, the managers here play an important role in formulating an effective decisions and plans after getting feedbacks from their employees so as to ensure to get maximum positive outcome in near future

Monitoring and controlling: Managers are also liable to monitor and control business activities and operations with a motive of providing quality products with the help of utilising available resources in an optimum manner.

Providing training: The managers of M&S should also require to conduct training programs in order to enhance their skills and capabilities. Performance evaluation of workers should require to carried out to analyse their performance through comparing actual with standard performance. This will help in identifying the deviation if any, and thus able to resolve them through implementing corrective actions and plans.
