INTRODUCTION
To work in an effective manner, it is important that a healthy work environment is maintained in an organisation. Thus, it depends on the surroundings that is provided by the firm, as if it is appropriate than it will enhance the performance of an individual or vice versa. Therefore, organisational behaviour shows how an individual communicate with its subordinates for accomplishing the task in an effective way (Adeniji, 2011). This report is conducted on the BBC company which is one of the renowned organisation that broadcast various activities in United Kingdom. This assignment will determine the influence of culture on the behaviour on a company. Along with this, evaluation of content and process theories for motivating employees are included whereas the second part will undertakes the application of philosophies for various business situations so that company can run their business effectively.
TASK 1
P1 Influence of power, culture and politics on organisational behaviour
a) Use of Handy's culture typology to determine the culture in BBC
Culture, power and politics plays an important role and have a great impact on the performance on an individual in a company. Culture is said to be a set of ideas and social behaviour that is performed by a person in a company. Therefore, Handy's culture typology will help the organisation to know about this in a better manner. This theory was explained by Charles Handy and he has categorised culture in four major components that are given below:
Power: It is considered as one of the most essential factor that influence the behaviour and thoughts of people. Therefore, power in context with an individual provides an authority to deal with different circumstances that can hinder the activities of an organisation. Thus, a person with power carries a liberty to explain and regulate the task according to his/her choices.
Task Culture: It undertakes the activities through which tasks are assigned to every employees in an effective manner. Therefore, task culture plays a prominent role in carrying out the entire process properly. It helps a company in uniting the team so that they can perform in order to achieve a common goal.
Person Culture: This explains the behaviour and nature of an individual for a company. Thus, the task performed by a person comes under person culture (Armache, 2012). Therefore, an individual feels himself/herself superior than the organisation. Biggest drawback of this is that it does not promote organisational growth but instead workers concentrate on their own performance. As a result, a decrease in productivity can be seen because of which sale and profitability will be minimised.
Role Culture: This is considered as an ideal form of culture as it assist the organisation in assigning the task according to employees' capabilities with the help of balanced authority. Therefore, the competence of a person can be evaluated on the basis of their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, role culture is determined as one of the important factor and it is optimised by most of the organisation (Bolino and et. al., 2013).
Henceforth, according to the case scenario, it has been analysed that BBC has failed as a company in order to established a better communication and managing all the task in a better manner. Thus, investigation about child abuse was not performed by the company in an effective way. This happened because BBC has lacked behind in preventing the factors that takes these measures seriously. Therefore, company has failed miserably in maintaining a positive culture in the organisation.
b) Analyse of power, culture and politics and its affect on BBC
Power, culture and politics play vital role in business organization because all these helps in determining the worker's behaviour at workplace. Thus, environment provided by the company help others to evaluate the nature of employees. In context with BBC, they have a specified group and they are responsible for making effective decision for the organisation. Therefore, senior management utilise this for expressing views and imposing decisions on their workers and company as well. Thus, sometimes it creates a fear in minds of employees because of which their performance gets affected (Burnard and Bhamra, 2011). One of the biggest drawback of this process is that it doesn't give equal change to every individual for expressing their thoughts and views. Henceforth, it affects the liberty of a person in an organisation and it can be said that power can be used in negative sense as well.
This culture explains about the nature of how an employee behave in an organisation. This incorporates all the ideas, beliefs and values related to various people of different culture. The main objective of BBC is to give excellent quality of services and facilities to its clients of different fields whether of entertainment, national or international affairs. Company is famous for providing information with precession i.e. before broadcasting any content; they go through it and pay detailed attention so that authentic message is provided to its viewers. But BBC must ensure that too much attention towards a particular thing should not hamper the performance of the company and an individual as well. Therefore, lack of attention towards employees has become one of the weaknesses and due to this, they face problem in carrying out the investigation and it led the organisation towards bad light (Coccia, 2014).
Politics that are performed in a company can be known as “Workplace politics”. This is applied in an organisation for maintaining a healthy environment and for this they use power and authority. Furthermore, company can incorporate certain changes through which they can sustain a better position in the market area. This can sometimes have a negative impact as difference in values and thoughts may give rise to conflicts. Biased nature can be seen in some context because of which employees can get demotivated and their performance may gets affected.
TASK 2
P2 Evaluation of content and process theories of motivations
a) Content and process theories
Human resource department utilise these theories for motivating and increase the morale of employees in order to accomplish the task in an effective manner. Therefore, motivational theories can be categorised into two i.e. process and content theories (Collings, Scullion and Vaiman, 2011).
Process theories: This theory is taken into considerations so as to identify the factors through which they can encourage their workers. Thus, company is identifying all the factors through which they can motivate its employees so that they can achieve the set goals and objective effectively. Therefore, it is considered in order to fulfil all the needs and wants of its customers and this will enable the organisation in sustaining the loyalty of viewers for a long period of time. Some of the theories of motivation are given below:
Maslow's Hierarchy of needs: In this, the potential of a person is classified on the basis of their priorities given by an individual. Thus, it includes stages in which a person move towards second position after the completion of the preceding one. Therefore, completions of each and every stage motivate an individual for accomplishing the task and step forward towards the next level (Fuchs and Edwards, 2012).
Alderfer's ERG theory: It can be said as the further explanation of Maslow's hierarchy. In this, the needs of a person is classified into three categorise i.e. existence which includes basic needs, relatedness involves social needs and growth focuses on opportunities provided in order to fulfil the set targets.
In an organisation, individual perform according to the capabilities they have so, it is prime, duty of human resource department to analyse the needs and wants of a person so that they can allure an individual in accomplishing the work according to their expectations. BBC incorporates these tools and technologies for boosting up the morale of a person. This will enable the organisation to extract the work according to the company's desired. Thus, it is considered as one of the effective tool for improving the performance of an individual or organisation in terms of productivity (Kaufmann and Frisby, 2013).
Process theory: In comparison with content theory this help the organisation in understanding and justifying the presence of motivation in a company. Therefore, through this process, the firm tries to identify the behaviours pattern of a person so that they can evaluate the factors by which they can motivate the person. Process theory, not only motivates an individual but also guide them in performing the task in a better manner so that image of the company can be enhanced.
Reinforcement theory: This theory, helps the company in evaluating the nature and behaviour of a person so that company can identify the behaviour through which firm can gain profits and loss as well. Along with this, the values that will not add any value are eliminated. Other than this, it is also optimise for reinforcement and punishment so that proper actions can be taken accordingly.
Expectancy theory: According to this theory, behaviour of people is determined through rewards that goes hand in hand. For example: when employees feel that are to be rewarded than they tend to perform their task more appropriately so that they can attain the rewards (Kazemipour and Mohd Amin, 2012).
b) Evaluation of motivational techniques in enhancing the effectiveness in BBC
According to the current market situations, in it important that company performs their work properly so that they can sustain in the market for a longer period of time. Therefore, firm must keep their employees as they are the one with the help of whom enterprise can fulfil all their set goals and targets in specific period of time. For this, managers of an organisation uses above mentioned theories for encouraging and boosting the morale of an individual in a company. Along with this, it also ensures whether workers are working as per their potentials. In terms of making policies and practices BBC consider the suggestion which are being given by their employees and staff members. Therefore, workers assist the organisation in accomplishing the task in an effective manner. Thus, BBC incorporate both process and content theories in a right way and it is helping them in achieving the set goals and objectives. Therefore, it is effective in order to motivate and encouraging a person who are working in a company (Kellison and Mondello, 2012).
For performance appraisal firms uses incentives and rewards as their tools so that they can motivate workers to perform in a better manner. Therefore, firm incorporate these for getting desirable results. Thus, it can be seen that financial reward plays an important role in boosting up the morale of a person and along with this, company can retain their employees for a longer period of time. Henceforth, it is crucial that broadcaster is optimising the resources in a better manner so that all the needs and wants can be fulfilled of its customers.
c) Role of motivation in achieving organisational objectives
In an organisation motivation plays a crucial part for enhancing the business operations in an effective way. This assist an organisation in accomplishing the goals and objectives of a company. Some of the ways through which firm can motivate its employees are for attaining the targets are mentioned below:
Increased employees commitment: This encourage an individual to remain committed towards their task and for this they put their best efforts. Thus, this help an individual in accomplishing the task effectively that are assigned to them (Raes and et. al., 2015).
Employees contentment: Under this, company tries to provide a better environment where employees can feel more satisfied. Therefore, BBC put its best efforts in order to maintain a synergy and harmony so that firm can attain their set targets and objectives.
Personal development: A motivated person is capable of achieving the goals of the organisation and by himself/herself. Therefore, the traits that are acquired by the person is utilised for accomplishing the organisational goals in an effective manner.
Employee efficiency: Capabilities of doing the task can be determined by the willingness of performing work by an individual. Therefore, it is important that company assigned the roles and responsibilities according to the ability of a person. As a result it will assist the company in attaining the task in an effective manner (Salin and Hoel, 2011).
In terms of BBC, they have determined motivational theories in order to make sure that appropriate steps are taken so that all the set targets and goals are accomplished in a better manner. Thus, company's main motive is to give adequate information that are authentic so that its viewers can have proper knowledge of any matter. They are considering Maslow's Hierarchy as a major tool for motivating its employees. However the organisation doesn't entertain an individual by giving them rewards in the form of money and they follow different procedure for the same. Thus, they maintain a proper balance between punishment and rewards at the same time. Other than this, they utilise remuneration and gifts for upgrading the performance of the individual.
TASK 3
P3 Features of an effective team against ineffective one
a) Different types of teams
Squad is very important so it is essential that company builds a strong team who can help the organisation in attaining the target and objectives in a better way. Thus, they perform the activities for achieving a common goal (Shiu and Yu, 2010). Other than this, they play an important role in resolving the issues and problems in order to maintain mutual understanding amongst all team members. For achieving a specified goals many organisation develop certain team who are eligible in performing the particular task effectively:
Cross-functional Teams: Under this, functional teams are formulated so that they can perform the task and for this, they take help of professionals of different departments in order to complete the work in a specified manner. For example: for introducing a new product cross-functional team can actively participate for identifying objectives of the project.
Problem solving teams: These are the teams that are made so as to resolve the problems and issues that is creating problem in performing the entire process in a better manner. Therefore, serious issues are tackled by this team, thus after resolving the problem the team disappear.
Virtual teams: Under this, team tries to communicate with members of the team using mediums like digital medium instead of face to face interaction. As BBC is providing its services all over the world so for them it is providing them better results because it is enabling them in communicating with various members of the team who are residing in different locations (Suma and Lesha, 2013). Therefore, the company is optimising effective tools and technologies for building an effective interaction process.
Project teams: As it can be analysed that, it is a kins of team that is formulated for performing a task that are related to a specific projects. Therefore, for some context BBC generates a team for accomplishing the goals and objectives in a better manner. As a result it will provide an effective outcomes through which they can fulfil the needs and wants of clients and company as well.
Functional Team: As the name suggests, it is formed in order to perform a functional task and for this, team is build according to the similar skills and knowledge that person acquires. For example: In order to resolve the problems that are related to the finance company takes help of professionals who are expert in giving effective solutions.
b) Elements that are required to make an effective team
Reason behind forming a team is to fulfil all the demands and objectives effectively, therefore, BBC's prime objective is to provide quality broadcasting services. Thus, in order to accomplish this they hire candidates who fits best for the job along with this managers of the organisation make sure that it is fulfilling the purpose for which they are formulated. Therefore, for resolving all the issues they have hired around 32,250 employees who are helping them in attaining the goals and objectives effectively (Suppiah and Singh Sandhu, 2011).
Maintaining and handling the team in a better manner it is important for the management to monitor the performance of every individual on a regular basis. For this, management must ensure that mutual understanding and coordination is maintained so that it can promote productivity. Therefore, in order to understand in a better manner Tuckman model of development is applicable as he has explained about the group dynamics through which an effective team can be formulated.
Stages of the Tuckman are explained below:
Forming: It is considered as the first step in which the organisation focuses on developing a strong team and for this, they bring all the members together so that they can give their best efforts for performing their task for a common goal. Under this, leader plays a vital role and
Storming: In process of group development, it is at second stage. This kind of condition undertakes dispute situation with team members. It is most complex as well as critical stage (Teh and Sun, 2012). Under this, team performance reduce at this stage due to energy put in an unproductive activities. In a team, each team member use its own working style.
